The Compulsion of the RFID tag in India
Where it all began:
In 2017, the Government of India issued a law stating the compulsion of the RFID tag for vehicles across India. Whereas, the government has put this law into effect since December 1st, 2019. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification tag. This tag is found mostly on either the front or the rear windshield of a car. The card is made of plastic and stores the necessary information about the product, such as the color of the vehicle, the engine number, and chassis number, and so on. The RFID reader, which is installed at the toll gates on the national highways across the country, can read this information stored. I sync the tag with the bank account of the owner.
Working on the RFID tag:
- RFID tag works by transmitting information and receiving information with its inbuilt antenna and microchip. The microchip contains product information.
- Every card has a unique identification code. With this, it becomes easier to track vehicles.
- FASTag is one device which employs RFID technology.
- There are three primary frequency ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum used for RFID transmissions, which are low frequency, high frequency, and ultra-high frequency
Main Objective:
- RFID aims at improving the functioning of toll plazas and also digital payments. With the help of this, there will be a smooth functioning across the toll plazas allowing all vehicles to cross without stopping, thus avoiding the long queues to pay the toll.
Advantages:
- This benefits in saving time,
- Saving fuel
- Increasing asset visibility.
- The toll charges are debit from either the savings or the prepaid account of the owner.
Applications of the RFID tag:
There are many applications of the RFID tag which the Regional Transport Office can take advantage of, for instance,
- the information on the car can be helpful to collect specific penalties from them.
- With the help of the unique identification code, it will be easier to locate stolen vehicles. It also gives authorization to your car.
- This tag is known to be the ‘Aadhar’ for vehicles throughout the nation.
How the Government of India is implementing the use of the RFID tag?
- The government has also partnered with over 23 banks in the country to make this a success. Some of them include the State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank. The National Highway Authority of India has also partnered with Amazon and PayTM to distribute as many tags as possible. There is a cashback scheme of up to 2.5% made available for customers using this facility. Enables the identification of an object from a distance without requiring a line of sight..
- According to the data provided by the government, there are more than 52 lakh tags that have been issued.
Where can the RFID tag be purchased from?
- The RFID tag can be purchased either from Amazon, PayTM, or the banks mentioned above. Wal-mart is one of the largest consumers of RFID to assist in the tracking of shipments of the merchandise.
- They can be recharged using the MyFAStag application available on all android phones. This simple and robust framework increases transparency and efficiency in processing transactions.
- RFID is thus putting an end to the barcode generation system and giving rise to new IoT concepts.
